A room of my own

I often said I didn’t need a sewing room, but I have to admit that I’ve been a little bit envious of people who did have their own little rooms. I never wanted it to be big and perfect, but a bit of space where I could leave out my stuff… But I never thought it possible in our tiny home, so I didn’t give it too much thought.

Until my husband decided to ask my father to help him build that final room downstairs (in the former garage) so that our youngest could move in there and I could have a room of my own. I love it so much! I’ve been organizing and rearranging things for a week now and it’s still not really done, nor will it ever be fit t feature in a magazine, but I still want to show it to you all today.

Right behind the door is my writing nook. And the closet with my vintage dresses (that still don’t fit, but at least now I can see them)

Then, left to the window is my sewing table. I looked all over town for a small table and this one fits perfectly.

At the other wall is my grandmothers little kitchen cupboard (holding notions), my sewing box and my baskets of yarn. Inspiration boards on the wall. I love those.

Lots of space for my fabrics.

My buttons all spread out and easy to find.

It’s tiny and messy but I’m so in love with it!

Green

I was going to post a picture showing my progress on the green dress, but it was too fuzzy. So you’ll have to take my word for it: I finally passed the yoke!

Daffodil

Well. you knew it was coming, didn’t you? One of the daffodils is open already. Such a great color to look at while outside it’s dreary and dark!
I have even more daffodils in the house now, because I got some as a thank you gift from the library today. I was a member of the jury for the regional reading-aloud-contest. Such fun to do! But also a little hard to make the right decisions.
The other two members of the jury and I were unanimous on which two children were the winners (out of eleven), but it was hard for some of them to accept it. Truth was, we thought they all were very good, and some of them were even very good. But the two we choose just stood out. One of them managed to read a piece of a book written as a diary, which is very hard to read aloud, since there is no dialogue or real tension in the story tiself. But she did very well! There also was an 11 year old who read from the Hobbit (in dutch). She did nice too, but she did so many funny voices it was a bit confusing. We did compliment her on reading such a difficult book however.
This was also my first appearance as a writer. I didn’t do very well on that. I never realized I was supposed to introduce myself, so when they handed me the microphone I nervously babbled about the book they most likely wouldn’t want to read, since it is meant for adults. Ahum! Oh well, on to the next event, I guess.
One of the other jury members is a writer of childrens books. I had met her before (as a reporter) and we chatted about how scary I find it to do these public things. She reassured me and told me it will become easier. I hope so! Also she promised to try and be at my book presentation, which would be great. She is the kind of person that calms you down by just being there.
She also told me one thing I really need to remember these days: Writing should be fun and it only is when you still feel like it’s a hobby.
I so needed to hear that (she has published a lot!). I feel a bit obligated to be able to tell people I’m working on my next book which will be out on….. So I was kind of stressed out when inspiration struck two weeks ago and I really wanted to finish this book before the presentation. Which is nuts and probably the reason for the headaches.
Writing is a hobby. And fun. Yes, thank you!

Inside garden

Today I finally got around to doing some household chores. I’m still having headaches, but I managed to do quite a lot. And to celebrate that my house looks like a home again I bought myself some flowers.
I love these small hortensia’s and I can’t wait for the daffodils to open up!

Kitchen

Our kitchen really is the heart of the house. Literally. It is in the middel of the house and it connects the livingroom to the rest of the house.
It is kind of hard to give it a good cleanup though, because there are always family members passing by, getting a drink, looking for something to eat or helping the cat spread hairs (I love that cat, but he is loosing so many hair I figure he should be bald by now – he isn’t).
Last week the kitchen was in the same state the rest of my house was, not too dirty, but in need of some attention. Time seems to slip away so fast these days, I have that feeling of chasing after everything that needs to be done.
This morning I was alone in the house, a very rare occasion. So the first thing I did was clean the kitchen. Which was great, without any interruptions. It even inspired me to clean the rest of the house too, so maybe I can relax for the weekend.
Uhm, if I finish doing some paperwork which I am about to start right now. But at least I’m feeling like I’m in control again…

Nature's order

I almost posted a picture of my livingroom covered in paper, but I didn’t want to scare you all away.
While I’m trying to straighten out my administration I noticed how evenly spaced the leaves on this plant are. Guess my messy head needs to look at something that is neatly arranged…
