52 hats :: 5 + 6 – Two of a kind

My fifth and sixth hat were two variations on the same pattern, a slouchy one and a normal fit.

The first one had me knitting on the edge. This was all the yarn I had left to finish it… (and that was after cheating on decreases on the top: I skipped a few rows I should have knit to make it flatter).

Anyway, It actually turned out nice, I think. I added two rows of YO and two rows purls to give it a bit more movement and texture and that worked out great.

I liked that texture so much I decided to use it on the next hat too. Same yarn, different color. Shorter brim and no increasing after the brim, but the rest is the same. I thought I’d like this one better, but it seems slouchy hats are growing on me cause I prefer the slouchy one.

Which one do you like best? And what are you up to these days? Any hats?

52 hats :: 4 – Bobble Top (free pattern)

Well, this one was a bit of a struggle (my notes were all wrong and I was short on knitting time), but I think I do like what I ended up with. It’s actually the same as this one (I gave it away before I could take any good pictures):

Want to make one too? You can download the free pattern here.

If you find any mistakes, or have any questions, contact me in the comments or via e-mail (adres is on the pdf)

I’ll be hosting my first monthly “Mad Hatters’ Link Party” tomorrow (feel free to link up any hats you made the past month, wether or not you’re doing a 52 hats challenge).

What have you been up to these days? Hats? Or bigger projects?
I’m feeling a bit of an urge to start something bigger or at least other than a hat coming up, but I’ve to find a place to buy yarn first…

52 hats :: 3 – a Field of Tulips

Last week I was in for something that required a bit more thinking than a simple slouchy hat. I was looking through a magazine with all sorts of stitch patterns (didn’t bring my grandmother’s book – was afraid it would fall apart) and found one that looked interesting. Then I thought: “those blocks look like tulips” and it sort of started growing wild from there.

The finished hat has no resemblance to the pattern that started the idea, but I kind of like what I did. It does need some tweaking (if i’ts too big to really show the pattern on my giant head it will be too big on most heads) before I’d call it a pattern (as far as patterns go when I’m trying to write them), but I am definitely going to make more of these.

52 hats :: 2 – Gray Slouch

I have all kinds of ideas for more intrigate patterns, but I kept it simple for my second hat, since I had a lot going on (like packing for a  two month stay on a Caribbean Island)

I personally don’t like wearing slouchy hats, but my future son-in-law (who took a slouchy hat I knit a few months ago home with him last Christmas) insures me these are very popular and that I could easily sell them.So, maybe I’ll make more, since “designing” (I just make things up as I go) and knitting them is easy and fun.

I did a simple, wide, brim (k4 p2 k2 p2) and knit the rest in stockinette stitch.

(excuse the not so good pictures – I was in a hurry when I took them)

52 hats :: 1 – True Blue

Well, the first one is done. So I’m off to a good start.

I had this linen/cotton blend in my stash (a thrift shop find) and thought it would be an even better start to use that first. I was going to do something more intricate, but the uneven yarn worked better in a simple design (I frogged my first attempt).

Hmn. I guess that’s all I have to say about it right now. So, so busy, but I can’t seem to get myself talking about the hows and whys before the thing I’m so busy preparing for is actually a fact. So stay tuned for that… 😉

Edited to add: Want to join me in my challenge to knit 52 hats/one hat every week (if you start later) this year? Let me know in the comments. If enough people decide to join I could create a weekly or monthly link-up. Or I could just be the mad hat knitter again and do a hat link up every week, without commitment to a challenge. Could be fun. Any thoughts on this?
